GAME SUMMARY:

Aggie fans were slammed back to reality at the hands of a Virginia trouncing!  Things seemed to be going fairly well for the first QTR and a half before the Cavaliers decided to put the game in the capable hands of Marques Hagans.  The league-leading (70.19%) pinpoint accuracy of the Virginia signal caller dissected the Aggie defense with the greatest of ease (64.0% for the game).

BIG plays were in order for the Cavaliers (80yd punt return for Alvin Pearman (2nd of the year) and a 71 yd TD bomb to Michael McGrew helped defeat the Aggies on this day.

BOXSCORE

GAME SUMMARY:

West Virginia goes to 3-2 in the conference and 5-3 overall with a 25-9 beating of the Boilermakers of Purdue. Purdue's vaunted pass offense was stymied by the Mountaineers defense as top conference QB Kyle Orton was picked twice, sacked 9 times and held to 168 yards on 13-28 passing. Purdue also lost 4 fumbles.

The West Virginia offense was competent and efficient in building the lead and playing keep-a-way. Rasheed Marshall was 19-36 for 224 yards and a TD while Jason Colson chipped in 40 yards on 7 carries. West Virginia rolled up 18 first downs to Purdue's 14 and the Mountaineers kept the ball for 34 minutes. New FG kicker Andy "it's" Good was 6 for 6 to ice the result. Only downside for West Virginia was 2 interceptions (one of which was fumbled right back) and 13 penalties for 101 yards and a surprisingly poor ground game.

West Virginia has dominated Purdue (#3), Georgie Tech (#7) and defeated Oklahoma State (#9), while losing to Ohio State (#4) by 2 points on a blown FG on the last play of the game and to Florida (#6) by 7 points as Rasheed Marshall fell 6 yards shy of tying the game on the last play. The only other loss was an understandable defeat at the hands of USC, one the most dominating teams in college football history. So come on voters, get over the small victory margin over East Carolina in the first week of the season and bump this team up the ladder.

GAME SUMMARY:

Buckeyes Stay Alive with Win Over Florida

The Ohio State Buckeyes kept their National Championship hopes alive with a convincing 35-11 win over  the previously 6-1 Florida Gators at The Horseshoe. The Gators took the opening kick off and moved the ball well until the reached the Buckeyes 31 yard line. A holding penalty gave them a 1st and 20 and the Gatoes came out in a 3WR 1RB set. OSU countered with a 3-3-5, with the LBR'S sitting back in coverage. But at the snap the Buckeyes stormed all 3 LBR'S and the FS keying on Ciatrick Fason and forced a fumble that was recovered by A.J.Hawk for OSU on the Ohio State 43. The Buckeyes could not move though and the teams traded punts.

OSU had a 4th and 2 on the Gators' 34 and went for it. Troy Smiths' pass to Roger "Hambone" Hamby was off target and the Gators took over.

After a 20 yard pass to Andre Caldwell, the Gators had to punt again. A 7 yard run by Antonio Pittman on 3rd and 2 got the Buckeyes to their own 28. On 1st and 5, Pittman ripped off left tackle for a 13 yard gain to the OSU 46. With the Gators concentrating on the run almost exclusively, Troy Smith hit Santonio Holmes with a 54 yard TD pass to get on the board first.

7-0 Ohio State 0:18 1st QTR.

Starting from their 21 after the kickoff, the Gators suffered 2 of their 14 penalties and had a 1st and 30 on their 11. The Buckeyes pass defense forced 3 incompletes, but on the 3rd down played suffered a penalty of their own giving Fla. a first down at their 31. OSU though stopped them dead in their tracks there and Fla punted.

Troy Smith gave the ball right back tossing a long pass int. to Cory Baily.

On 3rd and 3 from the 21 OSU held and Fla settled for a 38 yard Matt Leach FG.

7-3 OSU 8:06 2nd QTR.

OSU answered right back with a 7 play 62 yard drive aided by a 15 yard penalty on a 3rd and 12, 8 yard gain. Roger "Hambone" Hamby

14-3 OSU 5:24 2nd QTR.

Fla punt, OSU punt, Fla punt.

Ted Ginn Jr. returned the punt 34 yards to the Fla 37 with 0:08 on the clock. A 7 yard pass to Hamby and their last time out gave the sure footed Nugent an easy 47 yard FG attempt.(2-10) But a bad snap caused the kick to go wide left and the half ended with OSU ahead 14-3

Not to worry OSU fans, Maurice Hall returned the 2nd half kick off 54 yards to the Fla. 36. A 17 yard pass to Hamby and a 7 yard Pittman run had them 1st and goal on the 4. on 3rd and goal on the 6, OS! U lined up 3wr 1rb and beat the 4-2-5 defense with a line buck 6 yard Lydell Ross TD run.

21-3 OSU 12:36 3rd QTR.

Florida then moved very quickly to the OSU 30 on plays of 18, 27, 15, and 14 yards. But again the Buckeye defense held and Matt Leachs' 47 yard FG was short.

The Buckeyes then had their best drive of the day, UNAIDED by penalties. An 11 play 70 yard drive. Key plays...8 yard pass Smith to Ginn on 3rd and 3, 9 yard Pittman run on 3rd and 3, a 21 yard catch and run by Ginn to the Fla 18, a 10 yard pass from Smith to Pittman on 3rd and 3 to the Fla 1, where Smith called the QB keeper for the score.

 28-3 OSU 5:06 3rd QTR.

A 40 yard pass from Leak to Small got the Gators in scoring range at the OSU 9, But yet again the Buckeye defense stood tall and stopped the Gators 4 straight plays and Fla turned t! he ball over on downs.

After trading punts, Ted Ginn returned one 28 yards and was popped hard by Corey Baily and fumbled the ball. Luck was with the Buckeyes as Ginn was able to recover the ball at the Fla 22. 4 straight runs ended with FB Brandon Joe bulling his way through 4 Gator defenders for a 12 yard TD run.

35-3 OSU 10:12 4th QTR.

Andre Caldwell got Fla. in the endzone finally with a 41 yard TD pass from Leak.

The 2 point play was successful.

35-11 OSU 6:54 4th QTR.

The OSU run defense held Citrick Fason to 63 yards on 19 carries, and Fla avg only 2.4 yards per rush as a team. Chris Leak passed very well completing 22-43-323-1TD-0INT.

Troy Smith completed nearly 60% of his passes 19-33-228-2TD-1INT and was not sacked. Antonio Pittman carried ! 16 times for 101 yards. Ryan "Hambone" Hamby lead OSU receivers with 9 catches for 86 yards and 1 TD.

14 penalties for 108 yards did JJ in as did the opportunistic OSU defense who bent, but didn’t break all day except for the 41 yard TD pass from Leak to Caldwell.
